Pinnacle Hill Chiropractic offers a variety of hands-on therapies and patient education that will help women adapt to the changes their bodies go through during pregnancy. A number of changes and associated symptoms can occur during pregnancy due to weight gained. These include: demand and fatigue on spinal and pelvic muscles, stress on spinal and pelvic ligaments and joint stress causing vertebral and pelvic restrictions. Other common mechanical and neurological dysfunctions observed during pregnancy include: sacroiliac joint dysfunction and pain, pubic symphysis pain, low back pain, sciatica, pain at the coccyx (tailbone), leg cramps, headaches, nausea and carpal tunnel syndrome aggravated by the fluid retention seen during pregnancy.

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to restore normal tone to the uterus and correct the effects of neuro-muscular imbalance in the pelvis. Restoring motion to the pelvis and working with the round ligament throughout pregnancy may minimize aberrant uterine tension that may minimize fetal constraint and optimize fetal positioning.

Dr. Sarah & Dr. Caitlin's hands-on approach works to help restore balance to the women’s changing body. Using a variety of low-force adjusting techniques, she will help restore and maintain normal motion in the joints throughout the spine and pelvis. She will also use a combination of soft tissue techniques, nutrition, stretches and home exercises to further support and balance the involved ligaments and muscles.

Chiropractic care before and during pregnancy is an essential element of prenatal care. Pelvis restrictions may contribute to difficult labor for the mother. This is commonly referred to as dystonia. Dystonia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvis contraction, and baby mal-presentation. The correction of pelvis misalignments may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystonia.

Below are some potential benefits:

  • In the mother:

    • Prepares the pelvis for an easier pregnancy and birth by creating a state of balance in pelvic bony structures, muscles and ligaments

    • Removes torsion of the ligaments that support the uterus thus potentially reducing aberrant tension to the woman’s uterus

    • Reduces interference to the mother’s vital nerve system which controls and co-ordinates all of her systems and functions

    • By improving maternal function we are decreasing the potential for unnecessary intervention

  • To the infant:

    • Reduces interference to the mother’s nerve system allowing for better baby development

    • Pelvic balance allows the baby greater room to develop without restrictions to its forming cranium, spine and other skeletal structures

    • Offers the baby the room to move into the best possible position for birth

    • With proper fetal positioning, there is a significant decrease in dystocia and the resulting birth trauma caused by intervention

Webster Technique

Dr. Sarah & Dr. Caitlin are certified in the Webster Technique. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral or pelvic restrictions and/or sacroiliac dysfunction. In doing so neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved.

In clinical and theoretical framework, it is proposed that sacral misalignment may cause tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. It is these tense muscles and ligaments and their abberant effect on the uterus which may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth. For more information on the Webster Technique please visit the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website.
