Why Massage Should Be Part of Normal Self Care

In a fast paced life full of family, work, school, sports, and all of the mundane day to day chores that tend to swallow us up, self care is often the last thing we make time for.  However, I'm here to tell you that if you want to feel more energized, clear minded and less stressed tackling those every day goals, massage just might be something you NEED in your life rather than something you do as an afterthought.  Research has shown that the physiological effects of an hour of massage is equal to 8 hours of sleep. That doesn't mean that massage can replace a good nights sleep but it can help ease a tired body and mind in the same way that sleep can and it only takes an hour!  Massage increases circulation, boosts the immune system (something we all need during cold/flu season), lowers blood pressure, increases dopamine, decreases the stress hormone cortisol to help you deal with every day trials, reduces chronic pain, and has even been shown to help with anxiety and depression. Although massage is a fantastic tool for athletes and anyone suffering from chronic pain, you don't have to be an athlete or wait until your are in pain to see your massage therapist. In fact, using massage as part of a scheduled self care routine can help PREVENT injury and chronic pain from setting in.   Most people find that monthly massage leaves them feeling more energized, more productive and better able to handle the trials life throws their way. It is an amazing tool that has been used for centuries and should be utilized far more often for self care.   So if life has you stressed and feeling dragged down, consider making massage a part of your routine and see for yourself it's numerous benefits on both your body and your mind.
