When To Start Seeing a Prenatal Chiropractor

Chiropractic care is extremely beneficial when it comes to treating neuromusculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. If you have ever been pregnant or have known a pregnant women, you know that pain and discomfort frequently comes along with pregnancy. Pain can vary woman to woman and can change during each trimester.

Common pregnancy related complaints include, but are not limited to: low back pain, hip pain, sciatic symptoms, pubic joint pain and headaches just to name a few. These complaints begin as hormone levels in the body change, as the baby grows and as mom begins to experience biomechanical compensations. Women occasionally experience pregnancy-related aches and pain as early as 7-9 weeks. However, many women begin experiencing discomfort between 18 and 24 weeks as the baby is going through a major growth spurt!

Pregnant women can begin to see a prenatal chiropractor as soon as they want to! The majority of our patients begin care around 16 weeks, but we also have many patients beginning earlier or later. You do not need a referral from your OB or midwife to see a chiropractor, but many of them do suggest seeing a chiropractor for their neuromusculoskeletal complaints.

Having quality chiropractic adjustments and being prescribed appropriate rehabilitation exercises early in your pregnancy can actually help prevent pain and discomfort as you move through pregnancy. We obviously can't guarantee that a mom will remain pain free for her entire pregnancy if she begins care early, but it will definitely help. Getting adjusted throughout your pregnancy can also help decrease labor time, decrease labor pain, support a natural birth and optimizes the environment for proper fetal positioning.

Dr. Sarah and Dr. Caitlin are both Webster Technique Certified and specialize in treatment pregnant women in each trimester. If you are interested in learning more about prenatal chiropractic care, please give our office a call!
