The Irritation Zone

What the heck does that even mean? Honestly, I'm not sure if anyone else has ever used the term, but it's a concept that seems to resonate well with my patients.

Pain can vary by position. Some people feel worse sitting, standing, lying down or even moving. So what does this mean for recovery? Ultimately, as chiropractors we want to help reduce your pain and improve your overall function to hit your goals. At our office we also don't usually recommend rest. We encourage movement. Remember: motion is lotion.

At your initial patient appointment we will discuss your activities of daily living (ADLs) and how you feel while doing them. ADLs are more than cooking, cleaning and showering. They also include sitting, bending and going from sitting to standing. If you have pain during these essential daily movements, we need to discuss your posture and biomechanics while doing them. If you sit on a squishy couch, in your car or at your computer with a slouched posture, and it hurts your low back, we are going to call that your "irritation zone". Every time your spine is in that hyperflexion position you are entering your "irritation zone". The more you enter the "irritation zone" the longer it will take for the area to recover because you are continuing to irritate the damaged tissues. Same goes with standing. If your low back hurts as a postpartum woman, mainly while babywearing, your low back may sway into hyperextension due to a lack of core stability, causing pain in the L/S junction. This is considered the "irritation zone" in this situation.

Our goal is to educate you on why continuing to live in the "irritation zone" can prolong recovery. We want you to be able to notice and acknowledge that pain with basic daily activities is not normal. Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. We should be listening to our bodies and adjusting our habits as needed to avoid or reduce pain and dysfunction.
