The Fourth Trimester

For months we prepare for the something that people tell us is going to be one of the hardest things we will ever do. So we prepare for it. We read every blog, every book, interview doulas, take childbirth education classes...literally everything. It can be overwhelming preparing and sifting through all of the information you have gathered over your 10 month transition into motherhood.

Then baby is born and a new phase of life begins.

Unfortunately most women aren't told that the postpartum period is its own intense, but extremely rewarding, journey. Most women haven't prepared for it in the same manner they did their birth. You leave the hospital and all you can think about is how to raise a baby. Your bookshelf may have also had a transition during this time as well. The postpartum period is delicate and at this time our bodies are continuing to change, and more importantly, heal. Physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

The fourth trimester is the three months following the birth of the baby. Women have so much care during their first three trimesters, but sometimes forget that the three months after birth are just as important. Setting ourselves up for an intentional road to recovery during the postpartum period will bring health and wellness, but when we do not have adequate information or support we can head down a road to disease and poor recovery.

Other cultures around the world understand the need for new mothers to slow down during their fourth trimester. Even just 100 years ago here in the USA, there was a common practice called "lying-in" where women rested in the months following birth and were cared for by their families.

The knowledge of postpartum recovery and healing is not unknown, but seems to have been forgotten. Over the next few months our team of women's health providers will be continuing to put together some incredible resources for postpartum women. Stay tuned!
