Pregnancy & Rib Pain

Yesterday a friend from high school who is 22 weeks pregnant reached out to me and said that she recently began experiencing rib pain. She said the pain was on her left side just under her left breast. This is a very common complaint for pregnant women and unfortunately the treatment for it as said by most medical professionals seems to be "wait and see, but there isn't much we can do".

Obviously not being able to take a NSAID during pregnancy can be frustrating, because lets get real Advil helps more than Tylenol. However all a NSAID would have done anyways is mask the pain by temporarily decreasing the inflammation. The goal with musculoskeletal injuries should always be to fix the problem and not mask the symptoms.

This anterior rib pain is common in pregnancy, and is also commonly referred to as costochondritis. This is an inflammation of the area where the ribs connect to the cartilage that attaches to the breastbone. The reason inflammation begins is because moms belly has continued to expand as baby grows. This increases the amount of pressure and irritation placed on the anterior ribs, causing pain. Symptoms related to this condition can be pain just below the breasts on either side, pain with taking a deep breath, pain while moving positions, or pain while sitting for extended periods of time.

When it comes to treatment, chiropractic care can be EXTREMELY beneficial. Performing manual soft tissue manipulation to the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, adjusting the costochondral joints with an Activator instrument and KinesioTaping the area can be helpful for any expecting mother!
