Postpartum Posture

If you have spoken to a postpartum mother recently I'm sure that they have mentioned having midback, upper back and neck pain. This can be from the countless hours of breastfeeding, bottle feeding, pumping, rocking, changing, co sleeping and just loving up on a brand new tiny baby.

A new mother's posture changes a lot from pregnancy to postpartum. During pregnancy women tend to have an increased lumbar curve as their belly grows and their center of gravity continues to be pulled forward. Following delivery, women spend a significant part of their day looking down with their shoulders rolled forward. This causes an increased thoracic curve and a muscle imbalance involving the pecs and midback muscles.

When people spend significant periods of time in a forward rounded posture their bodies can become comfortable there, despite the pain and discomfort they may be experiencing. So when you ask a new mom to sit up straight or to find a neutral spine while performing a postpartum box squat, they may experience pain between the shoulder blades. This is because their thoracic spine is restricted when moving into extension.

Making an appointment with a chiropractor who is experienced in treating postpartum women will be extremely beneficial during the immediate postpartum period, also known as the 4th trimester. A combination of soft tissue manipulation, chiropractic adjustments and postpartum specific rehabilitation will be extremely beneficial.

If you are 2 weeks or 2 years postpartum, Dr. Sarah can be an incredible resource when looking to reduce pain and intentionally recover from childbirth. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with her, please give our office a call!
