Keep Yourself Healthy




A lot has happened this year surrounding illness. Today I'd like to discuss wellness and some easy ways to keep yourself healthy this cold and flu season. I would like to preface by saying that the things listed below are not a way to combat or prevent getting COVID-19.


Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial to promote general wellness, but also helps to improve immune function and decreased inflammation. 

Hydration

In a well hydrated system, our immune system is supported by the lymphatic system which is meant to remove toxins and waste from the body. The lymphatic system also contains white blood cells that help fight infection in the body.


Vitamin D

As the days get shorter, we see the sun less - especially in Rochester, NY. "Vitamin D can modulate the innate and adaptive immune responses. Deficiency in Vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity and an increased susceptibility to infection"(1). Low Vitamin D levels can also lead to seasonal depression. The recommended daily amount for a healthy adult is 600 IU, however generally 1000-2000 IU will help maintain adequate blood levels. Foods that contain high levels of Vitamin D include: cod liver oil, salmon, mushrooms, milk and eggs.

B Complex

Each B vitamin plays a critical role in energizing and boosting immunity in the body. They are also essential for a variety of biochemical processes in the body.

Zinc

Zinc is beneficial for the immune system and can even be taken soon after cold symptoms appear to reduce the length of the cold. Consider adding oysters, red meat, poultry, beans and nuts to your diet.
