How Do You Cope With Stress?


Prior to the pandemic I always thought that I handled stress pretty well. Then the pandemic hit and BOOM. Breakdowns were common from March to June or so, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one experiencing that. Whether you were a business owner, a healthcare provider or a parent early in the pandemic, life was tough.


Patients often relate their stress levels to work or their personal lives - meetings, budgets, deadlines, potty training, relationship struggles and even COVID-19 during this time period. But how do you cope with the stress? Many people choose to have a glass of wine or a beer (or a few) after work every night, others run, lift weights or do yoga and some meditate or journal.

Although we are over 5 months through the first pandemic of our lifetime, there is still plenty of time to find the best way to cope with your individual and specific stressors. Stress can lead to hormonal imbalances, specifically excess cortisol. Excess cortisol can lead to depression, issues sleeping, weight gain, a slower metabolism and even decreased immune function.


Here are some nice alternatives to drinking alcohol to cope with stress:


  • Exercise (strength training, yoga, running)

  • Meditation or journaling

  • Finding a hobby

  • Spending time outside (Vitamin D is important)

  • Getting enough sleep


So next time you have a rough day at work or at home with the kiddos, consider journaling, getting outside or getting a quick workout in instead!
