Chiropractic care has been traditionally known to help with spine pain. As the profession continues to evolve, we now know that chiropractic care can successfully and effectively treat a wide variety of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Pregnancy often comes with a variety of brand new aches and pains. Pregnancy related complaints can range from sacroiliac joint pain, lumbar facet syndrome, lumbosacral sprains, SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction), sciatic-like symptoms or even headaches and malpositioned babies. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is very specialized. Many doctors have gone through additional training to become certified in the Webster Technique. This technique focuses on pelvic restrictions to help mom function optimally. By carefully and specifically adjusting a mother's pelvis, uterine and muscular function is optimized to help promote an easier pregnancy. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can also help provide an ideal situation for a complication-free labor and delivery, often preventing the need for a cesarean birth or other interventions. Pregnancy tends to alter a mother's posture by shifting her center of gravity forward, therefore creating an anterior pelvic tilt, an increased lumbar lordosis and an increased thoracic kyphosis due to overcorrection. As this occurs the thoracic spine, lumbar spine, the lumbosacral junction and the SI joints begin to take more stress as the psoas muscle begins to tighten. The Webster Technique includes a variety of protocols to address all of these areas of discomfort. Chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy can positively affect pelvic posture, uterine tension, pelvic mobility and pain. It is never too early to begin getting adjusted during your pregnancy. The sooner the better! Research shows that chiropractic evaluation and treatment during pregnancy may be considered a safe and effective means of treating common musculoskeletal symptoms that affect pregnant patients. However there still needs to be further research performed to gain more understanding of the subject. Another study states that slight soreness was reported after the first adjustment in some patients, but this was resolved in 100% of cases by the second visit. Please also remember that a number of different modifications are required to deliver adjustments and with regard patient positioning for pregnant women to make the appointment as comfortable as possible.
