Do You Become Addicted To The Chiropractor?

We hear this on a regular basis in our office. Patients come in for their initial patient appointment and were originally hesitant about chiropractors because they have heard that they get "addicted to it". When patients ask me if this is true, my immediate response is "no, but...".

Keep reading to see the but!

Our responsibility and job as chiropractors is to perform a thorough history of a chief complaint, perform a past medical history, perform an orthopedic/neurological examination to the area of complaint, develop a diagnosis and treat the patient accordingly. We determine which areas of the body are dysfunctional and not functioning or moving the way they are supposed to help restore normal function or motion to the area through manipulation, manual therapy, rehabilitation and patient education.

Chiropractic care is an evidence-based and conservative care option for people experiencing neuromusculoskeletal complaints. When you ask a patient what their goal from care is during their first patient appointment, most say that they would like to be pain free. OBVIOUSLY!

As you develop a doctor-patient relationship and begin to progress a patient through treatment and into pain free living, they are ultimately pretty happy. Now lets say that you get out of pain and think you're good, so you revert back to poor movement patterns, stop doing your rehab and stop getting adjusted...the pain is most likely going to return.

Overall I do not believe that people get addicted to chiropractic care. I think that they are addicted to well being and being PAIN FREE. Think of it more as a new habit than an addiction. You want to continue to get adjusted, move functionally and safely and do your rehab exercises daily, just as you should want to eat healthy, drink plenty of water and exercise.

If you have been experiencing some pain or discomfort that won't go away, if us a call!
