Chiropractic Care To Reduce Opioid Prescriptions

A recent study was released from Yale University discussing that chiropractic care is contributing to a 50% reduction in opioid prescriptions issued in the United States. Reports have stated that patients who have visited a chiropractor for musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions are currently 49 percent less likely to be issued and to receive an opioid prescription. Clinical guidelines in the US now recommend conservative care options, such as chiropractic care for treating complaints such as low back pain or neck pain. U.S. Congress has also recently passed new opioid legislation directing the Department of Health and Human Services to review its payment policies. This was done so that doctors are no longer encouraged to prescribe opioids over more conservative options, such as chiropractic care. This will hopefully continue to drive down the prescription of opioid medications throughout the United States over coming months and years.
