Do You Get Headaches?

Obviously headaches are a giant pain. Most people who get headaches assume that it is completely normal to have a few headaches a week. NEW FLASH! It is NOT normal to have headaches on a regular basis. That is your body telling you that something is up!

We always seem to have a large influx of patients presenting with headaches that they describe as a constant pressure or tightness, either on one or both sides of the head. The pain often begins in the back of the head, can travel forward along the sides, above the ear to the temple region, behind the eyes, radiate up to the top of the head, or a combination of those distributions.

For most patients, their pain originates in the cervical spine and the surrounding tissues and not necessarily within the head. These types of headaches are called tension headaches and are actually the most common type of headache reported among patients. Muscles that can contribute to tension headaches include but are not limited to the upper trapezius, suboccipital triangle muscles, semispinalis capitis, splenius capitius, and splenius cervicis.

When developing a differential diagnosis, it is crucial to rule out any neurovascular involvement. Once it has been determined to truly be a tension headache, patients respond extremely well with a combination of soft tissue manipulation, spinal adjustments, and rehabilitative exercise. These patients often have compromised posture and movement patterns that lead to the development of these headaches. These patterns usually manifest as a result of spending too much time seated at a computer, constantly looking down while using a mobile device, or even your sleeping position.

In any case, it is important to speak to your chiropractor for a full assessment and appropriate care. If you feel you suffer from tension headaches and want to do something about it, please do not hesitate to call our office.
