What Is The Rotator Cuff?

Shoulder pain is the third most common complaint of patients seeking medical care. Rotator cuff disease is the most common cause of this pain, and our providers see this on a daily basis!

The rotator cuff is comprised of 4 muscles and their associated tendons: supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis. These muscles initiate movement at the shoulder joint and stabilize the head of the humerus in the glenoid fossa of the scapula. Essentially "rotator cuff disease" is non-specific tendonitis of any of the 4 muscles, partial or full thickness tears of any of the 4 muscles or bursitis in the subacromial bursa.

Injury to these muscles can be caused by trauma and repetitive use, however the exact mechanism is still not clear. Pathology of the rotator cuff can lead to impingement and pain that is sharp and worse with overhead movement. Weakness is also often present.

Rotator cuff disease can be diagnosed and treated successfully by using a variety of different techniques. In our office we initially strive to decrease pain and inflammation and will eventually begin to incorporate rehabilitation exercise into your treatment plan.

If you have been experiencing ongoing shoulder pain, give our office a call and see how we can help!
