What Do Your MRI Results Mean?

MRIs can be confusing and a lot of the time the results may not even directly correlate with your symptoms. For example, you could have excruciating pain and only minimal findings on advanced imaging or you could have minimal pain and significant findings on an MRI.

The following findings are so common in asymptomatic patients that they must be interpreted with caution and be combined with a thorough physical examination.

Among patients in their 20s who have no symptoms at all, an MRI will find about:

37% have disc degeneration

24% have loss of disc height

30% have a disc bulge

29% have disc protrusion

4% have facet degeneration

Among patients in their 30s who have no symptoms at all, an MRI will find about:

52% have disc degeneration

34% have loss of disc height

40% have a disc bulge

31% have disc protrusion

9% have facet degeneration

Among patients in their 40s who have no symptoms at all, an MRI will find about:

68% have disc degeneration

45% have loss of disc height

50% have a disc bulge

33% have disc protrusion

18% have facet degeneration

Among patients in their 50s who have no symptoms at all, an MRI will find about:

80% have disc degeneration

56% have loss of disc height

60% have a disc bulge

36% have disc protrusion

32% have facet degeneration

As you can see these finding are VERY COMMON, even as a young person. Conservative care options, such as chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy and massage therapy are all evidence-based treatments for spinal conditions such as disc injuries. Always remember: be sure to have your MRI results interpreted by a clinician who is knowledgable in performing a thorough musculoskeletal examination in order to have an appropriate corelation.
