Chiropractic After Birth

Many women experience low back pain, sciatic-like symptoms and pubic joint pain during pregnancy, but what about after birth? Chiropractic care during the postpartum period is just as important as chiropractic care during pregnancy.

So what happens after baby is born?

Relaxin is released into your body during pregnancy to help loosen the ligaments of the pelvis so that a baby can be delivered vaginally. Following birth, relaxing can remain in your system for a significant amount of time - anywhere from a year following birth to 4 months following the cessation of breast feeding. This means that your muscles are continuing to work in overdrive well into your postpartum period to support your skeletal system. This extra stress on your pelvic can continue to cause low back pain and sciatic-like symptoms. It is important to continue to have your pelvis and low back adjusted following birth to ensure that restrictions are not present while relaxin is beginning to leave your body.

Your posture is beginning to change as well. During pregnancy your belly was causing your center of gravity to be pushed forward and increasing your lumbar lordosis, or low back curve. Now that baby has come, your center of gravity and lumbar curve will return to normal, but you will notice an increased thoracic kyphosis. The acts of feeding, changing and playing with your new baby will cause an increased amount of stress on your spine while you spend a great deal of time hunched forward. This forward posture can cause muscular imbalance and in turn pain and discomfort, which can cause upper back pain, neck pain and headaches.

What to do after birth?

Our goal following birth should be to maintain normal motion in your spine, strengthen your core and work hard to protect your spine while performing your activities of daily living. Always be sure to be careful while getting in and out of the car, picking up the baby carrier, picking your your infant from the crib or picking up your toddler from the ground.
