How To Increase Your Calories
As chiropractors our jobs entail more than just utilizing manual therapy to help with pain. However, most people don't realize that. Our education includes extensive nutrition training that encompases gut health, hormone imbalances, and overall wellness support. For a time I think that we got away from our roots as holistic healthcare providers and focused a lot on the MSK portion of patient care. This year we have been bringing our strengths together, learning from each oth

Should We Be Afraid of Soy?
The concept of plant-based or plant-focused eating is one of increased popularity and health benefits; we seem to be gaining more and more knowledge on the importance of plants taking the spotlight in our diets. But when it comes to soy, confusion on whether it is good for us or detrimental to our health tends to ensue. It seems as though there are people on opposite ends who eat and enjoy it on a regular basis in multiple forms, and then those who avoid it all cost, being co

RED-S: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport
RED-S: the result of not eating appropriately for the amount of energy that your body expends, specifically during sport
This is MUCH MORE common than originally realized and can affect every system in your body!
This isn’t just seen in elite athletes. We see it in adolescent and adult athletes, anyone who exercises and even pregnant & postpartum women. Women do not have to be lean or in a weight class sport to experience RED-S.
Symptoms usually begin as chronic fatigue an

Learning Longevity from Blue Zones
Blue Zone: a region of the world in which there is the highest concentration of centenarians, living healthy and happy lives. Dan Buettner, a National Geographic fellow coined the term of Blue Zones after heavily researching and spending time in 5 specific areas around the globe. ● Okinawa, Japan ● Sardinia, Italy ● Nicoya, Costa Rica ● Ikaria, Greece ● Loma Linda, California The only one that tends to stand out to most people is Loma Linda, surprising that there is a region

Infants and Standing Containers
If you have read any of the previous blogs about containers, you know that I am not the biggest fan of containers. I know as a parent you have to do what you have to do to survive and accomplish other activities without holding your child constantly but in regards to containers, less is more in my opinion. Generally, if you are using containers, short and infrequent intervals (10-15 minutes at a time) followed by extra floor time to play and move around freely would be best.

Eat Seasonally to Support Your Immune System
We often hear the recommendation to eat what’s “in season”, but do we really know why? There are actually a number of important reasons to do so, one being to support your body from future illness; something we all could use more knowledge on this day in age. As the weather begins to slowly move into warmer temperatures and inching toward the first day of spring, we can all begin to look forward to more time spent outdoors, flowers budding, and slightly longer periods of sunl

Glycemic Control
Your glycemic control is utilized to measure your body’s ability to stabilize and manage blood glucose, or blood sugar levels. When we think of high blood sugar, type II diabetes can often be linked to this as it is focused in poor glycemic control and higher blood glucose levels. However, those with diagnosed chronic conditions are not the only ones who should be keeping a close eye on insulin and blood glucose. Our blood sugar levels can be affected by a number of things, a

Let's Chat About Calories
Lately we have been discussing food with a number of patients. Many of our patients understand the need for healthy proteins, fats and carbohydrates in their daily diets, but we have mainly been discussing how much! We tend to see two sides of the spectrum. Either people are eating too many unhealthy things and/or not enough healthy things. Unfortunately diet culture has made us think that eating less, cutting carbs and removing fat from our diets are the most appropriate wa

Bloating and How to Help
● Constipation ● Celiac Disease ● Bacteria Overgrowth ● Food Allergies/Intolerances ● Thyroid Disorders ● Hormone Imbalances These above listed issues can all be causes of bloating occurring in an individual. It is not an exhaustive list, but points to a number of reasons why we see discomfort and can lead us onto a path of helping. Because, when bloating occurs in the body, that is not all it is. It is just the present sign to the individual, noting that there are more issue

Start and Keep a Healthy Habit with the Stacking Method
Things we know all too well: “it takes 30 days to form a habit”, “habits will be broken if not disciplined enough to do it every single day”, etc. What if those things could be true, but they aren’t the right focusing point for every person out there trying to implement something new or positive into their life? Beginning a new habit can be daunting; and placing focus on the end goal and the potential pitfalls may not be the best option for every single person, I know it isn’

Getting the Most Out of Your Food - Sulforaphane
We are well aware of the endless benefits of varieties of vegetables in our diet, but how we extract those benefits from the food in the most effective way is often lesser known. Today we will be discussing the compound sulforaphane - its importance in our diet and tips on how to make sure you aren’t losing it during the cooking process. Sulforaphane is a sulfur-rich compound/phytochemical found mostly in green vegetables, commonly those that are cruciferous (broccoli, brusse

Herbs 101 - Gentian Root
Gentian is a bitter herb, with its roots used for centuries in herbalism to greatly support the digestive system. It is used for problems such as loss of appetite, intestinal gas, diarrhea, gastritis, heartburn, and vomiting. Its uses can venture even further into preventing muscle spasms and aiding in menstrual periods due to its ability to fight inflammation and swelling. As mentioned, gentian is a bitter root. In herbalism, bitters are those that have a predominantly bitte

Alternatives To Common Over-The-Counter Medications
Chiropractors are conservative healthcare providers that do not perform surgery or prescribe medications. We use our hands to help the body heal, but occasionally will suggest a variety of supplements to help as well. Advil, Tylenol, Aleve and Excedrin are all very common over-the-counter medications that our patients use on a daily basis for pain - whether that be due to low back pain, a headache or TMJ pain. Although these medications do not require a prescription to purcha

What is one possible cause of your headache?
Tension headaches are some of the most annoying and frustrating pains we deal with on a day-to-day basis. Do we really have to deal with that though? Many people, each day, sit at a computer and if it is not sitting at a computer, they are in some sort of rounded/forward posture. These positions can cause the forward rotation of the shoulders and are a key component to that bothersome headache. The problem isn’t in the back, more so, it is in the front. Constantly pulling you

Herbs 101 - Garlic
My nutrition professor once said that if he were forced to give someone an answer to the question, “what is the best/healthiest food to eat”, it would be garlic. Although garlic (allium sativum) is botanically a vegetable, it is widely used and understood as an herb or spice. A perennial plant from the amaryllis family, it is grown for its bulbs full in flavor. And although we are generally familiar with its uses in food and cooking, its powerful role in herbalism and the man

Vitamins and Minerals We Can’t Ignore - Magnesium
Magnesium. One of the most abundant minerals in the body, is also an electrolyte. Electrolytes, commonly discussed, but not commonly understood, are responsible for all electric activity in the body; this includes brain conductivity! Electrolytes such as magnesium are accordingly the reason for muscle activation, neuron signals in the brain, and keeping your heart beating. Although it is important to understand that electrolytes like magnesium, sodium, and potassium are used

How to Approach Stress - Part 5
Similar to last week’s focus, yoga requires attention of breath, but with some added optional movement. I say optional, because yoga is truly a practice of breath and mindfulness; the poses and movement were added as a means to help get you to that point. So, it is with no surprise that both the mental and physical aspects of a yoga practice are significant in reducing and working alongside stress. There is a wide array of yoga practices, all with their own origins and benefi

How to Approach Stress - Part 4
Part 3 of our stress series focused on our physiologic dependence on the great outdoors, and the incredible benefits that come from accessing it. In the last portion, I noted an additional way to control stress and create hormone balance while taking part in forest bathing and earthing; an added level of mindfulness in this practice, and in any practice of life, comes from proper breathing or breathwork. Breathwork can be described as a grouping of exercises that allow you to
